Red Mountain Key Knowledge: Red Mountain is a special ski resort nestled in the Canadian Rockies not too far from the U.S. border. The ski resort has a little of everything, including some nice steep shots near the top and loads of well-pitched groomers where skiers can crank it up as far as they want. Great, new lodging dots the base of the resort, and Rossland is one of the unknown ski town gems of North America.

A few words on the Snow at Red Mountain Resort

At Red Mt 11.4% of winter days with 6 inches or more of snow and 22% of winter months with 30 inches or less are middle of the pack for western destinations, while 7% of months with 90 inches or more is on the low side. Like most interior Northwest areas Red can see occasionally rain with its 3,800 foot base elevation. Red has a strong powder reputation due to its long and steep fall lines in the trees and relatively low skier density.

Accumulation and Preservation

Red averages about 75% open at Christmas and is less than half open in about 20% of holiday seasons. Red is liberal with opening terrain on a thin base, but it is a very steep mountain and likely to be rocky until the base is at least 4-5 feet. There are a wide range of exposures, with the original Red Mt. and the north side of Granite preserving snow best, while the Paradise and new Grey Mt. areas have sunny exposure. The midwinter interior Northwest climate is chronically overcast. Red Mt. like many resorts has its most reliable snow conditions from mid-January to mid-March.
