A few words on the Snow at Castle Mountain Resort

Castle Mt’s snow record is close to average for western destinations. 11.9% of winter days with 6 inches or more of snow and 22% of winter months with 30 inches or less are middle of the pack for western destinations, while 6% of months with 90 inches or more is on the low side. Nonetheless Castle can deliver a premier lift served powder experience. Most of the mountain is leeward of prevailing winds and refreshed with blown-in snow. Castle is primarily visited by day skiers from southern Alberta. Nowhere will you see fewer skiers on expansive big mountain terrain than midweek at Castle Mt.

The prevailing wind tends to strip snow from exposed locations and deposit it onto the more sheltered runs. Most of Castle is wide open skiing with about a 4 foot reported base. Despite primary east exposure, Castle’s snow preservation is very good through February in the chronically cold and often overcast climate. Melt/freeze conditions in the steep South Chutes in particular are likely in March if it is sunny. Castle Mt. like many resorts has its most reliable snow conditions from mid-January to mid-March.
