Schweitzer Key Knowledge: Alterra Mountain Co. purchased Schweitzer in June 2023, and its inclusion to the Ikon Pass will follow. Schweitzer's northerly latitude—it's way up in the Idaho panhandle—helps keep snow colder. Nearly half its slopes face east, however, so things can go into freeze-thaw cycles by mid-February if the sun is showing. Its location is a blessing for locals and lift lines—it's close to nothing, still nearly two hours to Spokane—and a curse for those seeking to visit from afar. Upper slopes and tree skiing can hold good snow several days after a storm.

A few words on the Snow at Schweitzer Mountain Resort

At Schweitzer 11.6% of winter days see 6 inches or more of snow, 10% of winter months see 90 inches or more, and 20% of months see less than 30 inches. This is average snow frequency but snow is measured low on the mountain so the reality is above average for destination resorts. Like other interior Northwest areas Schweitzer can get occasional rain at its elevation range of 4,000 - 6,400 feet. Schweitzer draws primarily weekend skiers from Spokane, so midweek powder skiing in the expansive terrain and well-spaced trees can last all day long.

Accumulation and Preservation

Schweitzer averages about 75% open at Christmas with about 15% of seasons being less than half open by Christmas. Despite primary east exposure, midwinter snow preservation is very good in the chronically overcast and foggy climate. Widespread melt/freeze conditions are likely in March if it is sunny. January and February are the most reliable months at Schweitzer.
