Aspen Mt’s snow record is typical for Colorado. 10.0% of winter days with 6 inches or more of snow and 27% of winter months with 30 inches or less are middle of the pack for western destinations, while 4% of months with 90 inches or more is on the low side. Snow density as in most of Colorado is as light as it gets. Powder skiing on Aspen Mt. requires good local knowledge of the less obvious gladed areas.
Accumulation and PreservationAspen Mt. averages about 80% open at Christmas, and is less than half open by Christmas in 15-20% of seasons. Much of the advanced terrain such as Bell Mountain has been picked clean of large obstacles and thus skis well on a 3-4 foot base. Aspen Mt. is high altitude and half north facing so snow preservation is excellent. Surfaces can sometimes be challenging where skier traffic funnels into and below Spar Gulch on the lowest quarter of the mountain.
