Snowmass Key Knowledge: Snowmass, removed from the other Aspen mountains by a 15-20 minute drive, feels more like one of the free-standing resorts in the I-70 corridor, as it has a village that has grown around the ski resort and now has a center of gravity all its own. There's loads of terrain at Snowmass, but the expert shots tend to be short. Families will love the wide blue cruisers.

A few words on the Snow at Aspen Snowmass

Snowmass' snow record is typical for Colorado. 11.1% of winter days with 6 inches or more of snow and 21% of winter months with 30 inches or less are middle of the pack for western destinations, while 5% of months with 90 inches or more is on the low side. Snow density as in most of Colorado is as light as it gets. Powder tends to last awhile at Snowmass as the best stashes require multiple lift circuits and thus get tracked out gradually.

Accumulation and Preservation

Snowmass averages about 75% open at Christmas, and is less than half open by Christmas in 15-20% of seasons. Some of the exposed and steep terrain in the Cirque and Hanging Valley is often not open until sometime in January. Snowmass is high altitude and over half north facing so snow preservation is excellent. The flatter lower mountain can melt/freeze in late season, but much of the upper terrain retains packed powder into April.
